Health & Safety

The Health and Safety of Volunteers is of prime importance to Outset. It is the policy of Outset to comply with the terms of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and subsequent legislation and to provide and maintain a healthy and safe working environment.
At your project:
A risk assessment of your project will have been carried out. Your Volunteer Advisor or Project Supervisor will inform you of the results.
You should be made aware at your project of the location of all fire-exits, extinguishers (including what type of fire they can be used on), and procedure for evacuation in case of a fire.
You need to know where the first-aid kit is, and the location of the accident book (in which you must record all accidents, however small they may seem). Someone on the project should be a qualified first-aider; you need to know who this is.
If you are operating equipment, or working with any potentially harmful substances on a project, you must be given adequate training, supervision, and appropriate protective clothing before starting.
Personal Safety:
There are a few sensible steps you can take to improve your personal safety on a project. In most cases common-sense rules!
Be cautious about what you tell people about yourself on a project. For example don’t give out your address except when absolutely necessary, or tell others anything too personal until you know them better.
Don’t borrow or lend money.
When it is necessary to meet people, do so in a public place. Don’t invite them to your house and don’t go to theirs.
If you have to work away from the project at any point, make sure someone you can trust knows where you are going. Leave a phone number whenever possible.
Criminal Backgrounds Check
To ensure the safety of all our volunteers and placement providers anyone aged over 16 who is volunteering with children or vulnerable adults will need to complete a CRB (Criminal Backgrounds Check) form.  Your local Outset Advisor will advise you if a CRB check is needed and talk you through the paperwork required.
